Community Outreach
Round U.P. Program
Your Keweenaw Co-op Market & Deli established
our Round U.P. Program in response to the 2018
Father's Day floods and landslides. We felt we
could provide a transparent connection between
our customers who wanted to financially assist
our neighbors in need. With our customer's
generosity we collected nearly $5,000 for
flood
victims in just a couple of months. That money
was then donated to the Portage Health
Foundation for distribution. We enhanced our
Round U.P. Program over the following year —
initiating it when necessary. When the Byler
Family Farm was lost due to fire in 2019, our
community came to the rescue once again and
Rounded U.P. collecting nearly $5,000.
Since then, we've kept our Round U.P. Program as
a "forever program" helping out such
organizations as Little Brothers: Friends of the
Elderly, 31 Backpacks, Copper Country Senior
Meals on Wheels and Big Brothers, Big Sisters.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we named
the Western U.P. Food Bank — along with other
local food pantries — as our Round U.P.
recipient in April 2020. Thank you Copper
Country for making the Keweenaw Something EXTRA
Special.
Bring-a-Bag Campaign
The Co-op’s Bring-a-Bag Campaign, launched on
Earth Day 2011, is one of the ways the Co-op
gives back to the community. Every bag the Co-op
saves because shoppers bring in their own
reusable bag earns money for the community. At
the end of each 6-month campaign cycle the
savings are donated to a local organization or
project selected by the Co-op Ownership. Owners
vote for two recipients each year at the Annual
Meeting. If you know of a deserving organization
or project that fits the criteria*, invite them
to fill out an application. (*See application
for selection criteria.)
Donations & Event Sponsorships
The Co-op supports local, non-profit and
cooperative organizations that are working to
increase the health of the community and/or the
environment. This includes organizations that
address food and nutrition issues, community
building, sustainability, environmental
preservation, cooperative values, local food
production, or alternative/holistic health care.
Donations are typically provided in the form of
Co-op gift certificates (in amounts not to
exceed $25), which can be used to purchase goods
for your event or as door prizes or fundraising
auction items. Occasionally the Co-op is able to
fill requests for donated products or other
items.
Funds are limited, the Co-op is not able to
grant every request. Please look over the
donations philosophy and guidelines included
with the application form below.
Business & Community Partners
National Co+op Grocers
(NCG)
The Keweenaw Co-op is a member of the National
Co+op Grocers, a co-op that provides business
services for over 140 retail food co-ops like
ours. It connects us to other food co-ops and
lets us focus more of our time on providing
greater value to our owners, shoppers and local
community.
Michigan Tech Employees Federal
Credit Union (MTEFCU)
Did you know that Credit Unions are a type of
co-op too? Cooperatives serve their members most
effectively and strengthen the cooperative
movement by working together. That’s why the
Keweenaw Co-op is happy to host a Michigan Tech
Employee Credit Union ATM for the convenience of
our shoppers.
Upper Peninsula Food Exchange
(UPFE)
The Keweenaw Co-op is proud to part of the
collaborative effort led by the Marquette Food
Co-op and MSU Extension in conjunction with the
Western U.P. Health Department to support the
local food activities taking place within the
Upper Peninsula’s distinct regions (eastern,
central, western). UPFE assists with the
development and ongoing maintenance of the three
successful regional food hubs and serves as a
resource portal for farmers, businesses, and
individuals looking to connect with and actively
participate in their local food system.
