Expect a More Natural 2018

By Nancy Trent - December 23, 2017 Naturals is no longer the groovy little cottage industry we all grew up in. Everyone is thinking natural and healthy. That includes convenience stores that are taking the healthy eating initiative very seriously as well as the most expensive, trendiest restaurants. It's top-of-mind for the luxury traveler, the backpacker, the couch potato and the uber athlete. But what is healthy?!?! You might be surprised to know it's not the same for everybody. Here are some trends to expect to see more of in 2018. Biohacking Goes Big Not just for the Bulletproof Diet cult anymore, there are other ways to hack your health to impact just about every, if not all, of your organs and body parts. Dave Asprey, spearheading the movement, is a hero. Personalized Nutrition I always knew I shouldn't be on the same diet as people half or double my age, height or activity level. My suspicions are now backed by evidence-based research. All kinds of tests are available to help consumers determine what diet works best for them and guess what, carbs help some people shed fat. Fats make other people skinny and others are going too light or too heavy on the protein. Wellness Means Slowing Down It's not just food, its fitness and beauty too. Rituals and mindfulness are not just for spirituality. Though we endlessly seek convenience, slowing down is being recommended for every aspect of your life. Rescue There are inventions to save us from the harmful effects of technology and ways to repurpose foods that aren't being used. Ugly fruits and vegetables are being hailed for their amped flavor and nutrition. Junk Food?!? The New Enemy is Junk Light Worse for you than junk food, this is another by-product of tech advancement. Junk light could be sapping you day and night. Sensory Healing Eyes and ears are impacted by their environment - they need as much care as your skin, if not more, and manufacturers are making versions of helpful tools that used to be only for professionals. Brain Supplements for a Bigger Heart You know you need to up your brain game to keep up. Keep an eye out for more brain supplements. Focus and memory were just the beginning, now there are brain supplements to improve your empathy. External Probiotics Ingestible probiotics are relatively mainstream, but they aren't just for the digestive system. Today's more progressive brands add them to skincare, hair care, etc. Earthing One of the ways to get more grounded is to literally get close to the ground and all of its healthy benefits. You might also consider being vibrated or infused with the frequency of the earth. The number of wellness products and devices you can buy to help continues to increase. Vibration Therapy is also being used for bacteria, germs, bones, lymph, muscles, glyphosates, etc. Sleep Gets Serious It's more than just going to bed and rising early - the quality of the hours you get makes a difference. Luxurious sleep could cost a fortune. Meat Eaters Eat Plants You don't have to be vegan to benefit from plants and you know it now. Plants are powering more motorcycle gangs, weight lifters, wrestlers, cowboys, truck drivers and other macho men (as well as everyone else) than ever! Millennial Mom Shortcuts From morning sickness and breastfeeding to body bounce-backs and med-free solutions, this younger mom doesn't waste time. She's making birthing look like it's really good for your health and easy. Sexual Healing Both men and women are removing the taboos and looking for products to make sex safer, easier and more fun. After all, there's research that proves it's really good for you, especially as you get older. Humanized Pets From food, to carriers to home decor, the animals will run the roost. Bread Is Making a Comeback With as many varieties and subtleties as wine; people are making the case for consuming more grains. Retro mills allow you to grind any type of grain into any type of fresh flour for opening up a whole new world of recipes. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Nancy Trent is a writer and speaker, a lifelong health advocate, a globe-trotting trend watcher and the founder and president of Trent & Company, a New York-based marketing communications firm with an office in Los Angeles.
