BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Co-op is governed by a nine-person board of directors
who are elected by, and from the owner-members. The board's
role is to represent the owner-membership, to create and
implement a vision for the Co-op and policies that guide
movement toward that vision.
Directors are elected for three-year terms each April at the
Annual Meeting. Potential director candidates are encouraged
to show their interest at any time throughout the year by
attending a meeting and/or contacting any of the current
board members. Board directorship is an excellent way to
become in a dynamic and effective process that is helping to
support a successful cooperative venture.
Board members contribute an average of ten to twelve hours
per month, including attendance at a monthly directors
meeting, held on the second Wednesday of each month at 5:30
in the Community Room upstairs at the Co-op.

POLICY GOVERNANCE
The Keweenaw Co-op board uses the
Policy Governance® system developed by John Carver.
Policy Governance allows the board to focus on the future
and the co-op's impact on the world.
Many co-ops have over a decade of history with the Policy
Governance® system.
Cooperative Grocer offers several articles with
testimonials about its effectiveness, insights as to its use
and, of course, a cautionary tale or two.
If you haven’t attended a meeting recently, you will
probably be surprised by what you find the next time you do.
A typical board meeting these days begins a week prior to
the meeting when the Board receives preparatory meeting
materials on areas of governance and performance the Board
is scheduled to monitor for that particular month. The
meeting itself focuses on four main areas: General Manager
Performance, Board Self–Evaluation, Ends Policies and
Governance Process.
